LIV Golf South Africa Round 3: Bryson Goes Bogey-Free, Southern Guards Storm to Team Lead

If you want to understand what LIV Golf is capable of when everything clicks — the atmosphere, the storylines, the scoring — South Africa is the event.

Bryson DeChambeau fired a bogey-free 7-under 64 on Saturday at The Club at Steyn City in Johannesburg to extend his individual lead to 21-under. That’s absurd scoring over 54 holes, but honestly? The individual race isn’t even the best part of this tournament.

The Southern Guards Are Living a Movie

The all-South African team — Branden Grace, Dean Burmester, Louis Oosthuizen, and Charl Schwartzel — rallied from two shots back to take a two-shot team lead heading into Sunday’s final round.

In front of sold-out crowds. At home. In South Africa.

Oosthuizen shot 64. Schwartzel shot 65. Burmester went bogey-free with a 65 of his own. Grace got up-and-down for birdie on 18 to move to 19-under individually, two back of Bryson.

“We’re feeding off the energy at the moment,” Oosthuizen said. “Me and Charl were playing so-so, and today we really felt the energy.”

Burmester put it best: “It’s not every day that you shoot 6 under and you’re the worst round in your four-ball.” When your worst player shoots 65, you’re doing something right.

Bryson Is Bryson

DeChambeau has been on another planet lately. After winning LIV Golf Singapore in a wild playoff two weeks ago, he’s right back in the hunt — and this time he’s making it look easy. No bogeys on a course where everyone else is making at least a couple.

At 21-under through 54 holes, he’s got a two-shot cushion over Grace. Jon Rahm and Abraham Ancer are tied for third at 18-under, so there’s still plenty of firepower behind him.

“I think I have to be a little bit of a rhino tomorrow,” Grace said. “I have to be tough. This is going to be a battle.”

Grace, Ancer, and DeChambeau will be in the final group off the first tee on Sunday. If you’re looking for fireworks, that’s where you’ll find them.

Why This Matters for LIV

LIV has taken plenty of criticism for atmosphere — some of it fair, some of it lazy. But South Africa has been electric. Sold-out weekend rounds. Four local heroes competing for a team championship in front of their countrymen. The kind of energy that makes you forget about the format debates for a minute.

Rahm lurking at 18-under means the individual race isn’t over either. And in the team competition, Fireballs GC and Torque GC are both two shots back of the Southern Guards.

Sunday’s Final Round

Championship Sunday at Steyn City. DeChambeau going for back-to-back individual wins. The Southern Guards trying to complete the fairy tale in front of a hometown crowd.

This one writes itself. Coverage on The CW starting at 8 AM ET.
