Houston Open 2026 Preview: Scheffler Needs This, and So Do a Dozen Guys Fighting for Masters Invites
The Texas Children's Houston Open features a struggling Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka's continued comeback, and a handful of players desperately trying to crack the Masters field.
Kyle Reierson The Texas Children’s Houston Open tees off Thursday at Memorial Park, and this isn’t just another regular-season stop. This is the second-to-last event before the Masters, which means it’s simultaneously a tune-up for the favorites and a panic room for the bubble guys.
Let’s break down why this week matters more than usual.
Scottie Scheffler: World No. 1 With a Problem
Here’s a sentence nobody expected to write in 2026: Scottie Scheffler hasn’t posted a top-10 finish in his last three starts.
The four-time major champion and two-time Masters winner is the overwhelming betting favorite at +300 (next closest is Min Woo Lee at +2250 — that’s how wide the gap is). But the numbers tell a different story than the odds suggest.
After leading the Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach the last three years, Scheffler has dropped to 78th in that category this season. For a guy widely considered the best iron player on the planet, that’s… not great.
The good news? Memorial Park is basically his home course. The Texas native owns three runner-ups in six starts here and has twice shot the course record 62 (2021 and 2025). If there’s anywhere to find your game two weeks before Augusta, it’s your home state.
He’s won one tournament in 2026. He wants to double that number this week. At +300, Vegas clearly thinks he will.
The Masters Bubble Is Real
The top 50 in the OWGR a week before the Masters get in. That cutoff is approaching fast, and here’s who’s sweating:
- Nicolai Højgaard (47th) — Right on the edge. A solid week and he’s safe.
- Pierceson Coody (51st) — One spot outside. Needs a result.
- Michael Thorbjornsen (56th) — The young gun needs a big week.
- Rickie Fowler (61st) — At +2900 this week. Fowler hasn’t played the Masters since… well, it’s been a minute.
- Taylor Pendrith (70th) — Basically needs to win. Twice.
There’s also Sudarshan Yellamaraju, fresh off a T5 at The Players Championship. That result alone shows the talent is there — now he needs to do it again with a Masters invite on the line.
Brooks Koepka Keeps Climbing
Koepka’s comeback story keeps getting better chapters. After a T56 and a missed cut to start the year, the five-time major champion has rattled off three top-20s including a T13 at The Players.
At +2600 this week, he’s got value. More importantly, he’s trending in the right direction heading into major season. Remember — this is a guy who historically plays his best when the stakes are highest. Houston is just the appetizer.
The $9.1 Million Purse
Other names to watch at Memorial Park:
- Min Woo Lee (+2250) — Defending champion who knows the course
- Sam Burns (+2450) — Texan who always plays well in the state
- Chris Gotterup (+2450) — The only other top-10 OWGR player in the field besides Scheffler
- Jake Knapp (+2600) — Big hitter on a big course
- Adam Scott (+3800) — Still grinding at 45, still dangerous
Coverage starts Thursday on Golf Channel and NBC. This is the last real tune-up before Augusta, and for about a dozen players, it might be their last chance to get there at all.
What to Watch For
The real story this week isn’t who wins — it’s who shows up ready for the Masters. Scheffler finding his iron game would be terrifying for the rest of the field at Augusta. Koepka continuing to build momentum makes the major season more interesting. And somewhere on the bubble, a player is going to have the round of his life because his Masters dream depends on it.
That’s what makes this week compelling. The stakes are different for everyone, but they’re real for all of them.
